60 Days, 60 Blogs Blogging Challenge

What is the 60 Day Blogging Challenge

To help me get back into the writing habit, I am launching a 60 days, 60 posts blogging challenge. This challenge will begin from March 5th and go on till May 4th, 2018. Every single day during this period, I will publish one new post every day.

To break the monotony of writing, I will try and write these posts in multiple formats. Some posts may be in audio, others as a video, while most will be a mix of text, infographics, and images. These posts will be about 500 words each, and will cover a variety of topics related to podcasting and writing- the two things that I love to do. I will also talk about social media marketing and life in a startup. In all, over the next two months, I plan to share the things that I have learnt while setting up Kamakshi Media and being a part of its journey.

I will also update some of the older posts so that the content remains fresh, for example, a very popular blog that I had written: 7 Ways to Record Podcast Interviews Online. The title should now read 10 ways to Record, because there are newer options available, and some of options like clammr are no longer around.

Blogging Challenge:Sample List of blog posts I am planning to write

– Review: Dropbox Paper versus Evernote versus Zoho Writing App for online Writing and collaboration

– How To: Distributing Podcast using WhatsApp

– Case Study: Branding using Podcasts

– How To: Setting Up a Podcasting Station

– Resources: Tools I use for Podcast Production and Distribution

– Writing: Nanowrimo experience

– Content Management: How we use put content strategy into action

– Startup Life, and everything else that comes with it.

Underworld Startup : Coming in August 2018

Below is an excerpt from my upcoming novel, which is a humourous take on the startup world.

Sameer’s Challenge

“Dad, I am tired of the secretive nature of our business. I cannot talk about it to anybody or even write a blog post. Hell, I cannot even brag about our latest heist or kidnapping anywhere. You have forbidden me from joining Facebook or Twitter, because you say that the cops might track us down that way. This is the age of sharing and social proof, Dad! We need to change,” Sameer remarked over breakfast.

MK, the dreaded Don, started at his 19-year-old son with anger, frustration and disgust combined. After a long pause, he simply replied, “Ok, but what are you going to do?”

“I don’t know yet, Dad, but I want to change the way we have been doing business over the years. There is very little innovation, we always are on the run from the law. It is getting difficult to find new markets and hire reliable people. Maybe we can change that,” Sameer replied in excitement.

“A startup? Have you been reading the silly newspaper stories again? We are ganglords. No we are the Underworld. You are lucky to be born in this family. What do you mean you don’t want to do this work? This is our family business.” MK roared. After a few minutes of silence at the breakfast table, MK thought of breaking the monotony of silverware making noise whenever it hit the china ware. “Ok tell me Sameer,” MK asked his son, “ You do not even know what you want to do. Okay, tell me this. Have you thought of a name?” MK might have calmed down but the anger in his voice was still evident.

“I will call it the Underworld Startup. Give me a couple of months and I will come back with a solid plan,” Sameer nearly screamed as he rose from his chair and left the room.

MK shook his head in disgust. “This startup fever is going to ruin him, and all of us in the process,” he sighed

“Leave the boy alone, he is a bright kid, full of ideas. Let us see what he comes up with. Do you know he is doing all this for Farah?” Dadi, MK’s 80 year old mother, reprimanded her gangster son. Somehow, MK felt that his mother was behind all this.

“The boy is going off track, and you are responsible for it, Ma,” MK responded. “The boy wants to leave the world of crime to impress the girl he likes. A girl who wants the son of a gangster to leave the business we have been in for generations. How original.”

“At least give him a chance,” Dadi said firmly.

“As you wish, Ma. Two months. The boy has two months to get his act together,” MK replied. The breakfast was over, and so was the conversation.

And thus began Sameer’s quest to launch his startup that most people thought was bound to fail from the get go.

Three Things to Consider While Hiring a Digital Marketing Agency

Hiring a Digital Marketing Agency

Once you have decided that you want to work with a digital marketing agency, the question arises, “Which digital agency to choose?” While a simple google search may give you a list of such agencies both in India and abroad, you may benefit immensely by following the checklist we present here. This will help you in understanding whether the agency you select are the right partner for you or not. More importantly, you will be able to maximize your return on investment (ROI), increase visibility and engagement. Below are some of the questions we asked ourselves when we were considering hiring a digital marketing agency for Baalgatha and my book NRI:Now, Returned to India.

1. Does the marketing agency Understand Your Business?

Not all forms of content and social media sites are suitable for every type of business. For example, if you are a B2B company, what is more likely to benefit you more? A presence on LinkedIn, or on Facebook? Similarly, if you are a photographer, will you benefit more by Instagram or Twitter? The right digital agency will work hard to understand you and your customers.

2. Do they Define the Goals clearly

Some of the questions you need to answer before hiring a digital marketing agency in India include: Are you looking for increased social media following? Are you trying to increase traffic to your website? Who will provide the content? How much time will you have to invest in the campaign? If you have to do majority of the heavy lifting, then why hire an agency at all? Similarly, stay away from an agency which promises quick results, such as increased traffic or sales.

3. How do they report?

Will the agency send a report at the end of the engagement that has so much data that will confuse you, or will they send periodic updates to help you understand whether the campaigns are delivering the results or not? For example, has the cost per click for Google adwords reduced over a period of time, or has the engagement on Twitter increased? Likewise, are you able to reach the targeted customers through Facebook ad campaign? If you know that you are going off course, you will have an opportunity to correct the course.

Last but not the least, you need to understand that the results will take time. It could be as little as a few weeks or may even take a few months. Digital marketing is a medium to long term play. Simply put, you will reap the benefits of the seeds you sow when the time is right.
